What happens during this examination?

  • Injection given into the upper arm or thigh muscle.
  • Protects against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C, a cause of bacterial meningitis and sepsis (meningococcemia).
  • One dose at 12 months of age (in Germany, STIKO recommends MenC at 12 months).
  • Booster dose at 5 years of age (before school entry).
  • Conjugate vaccine provides long-lasting immunity.

Preparation Tips

  • Bring the yellow vaccination record booklet.
  • Inform doctor if child has any bleeding disorder (e.g., hemophilia, low platelets).
  • Dress in easily removable clothing.

Questions for your doctor

  • What is the difference between MenC, MenACWY, and MenB vaccines?
  • Is meningococcal vaccination required for daycare or school?
  • Can my child receive MenC vaccine at the same time as other vaccines?

When to call the doctor

  • Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or vaccine component (diphtheria toxoid, CRM197).
  • Moderate or severe acute illness with fever (postpone until recovery).

Parent Tips

  • Meningococcal C disease is rare but very serious (fatality rate 5-15%, permanent disability in survivors).
  • Vaccination is safe and effective; local reactions (pain, redness) are common.
  • In some countries, MenACWY (quadrivalent) is used instead of MenC for broader protection.
  • Adolescents may need a booster if traveling to high-risk areas (e.g., Hajj, sub-Saharan Africa).
