What happens during this examination?

  • Apgar score (skin color, heartbeat, reflexes, muscle tone, breathing)
  • Measurement of weight, length, head circumference
  • Vitamin K prophylaxis to prevent bleeding
  • Examination for external malformations
  • pH value measurement from umbilical cord blood

Preparation Tips

  • Examination takes place directly in the delivery room
  • No special preparation needed

  • How is my baby doing after birth?
  • Are there any abnormalities in the examination?
  • When is the next examination (U2)?

When to call the doctor

  • Breathing problems or unusual breathing sounds
  • Pale or bluish skin color
  • Poor feeding or refusal of first meal

Parent Tips

  • Use the time after birth for skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo method)
  • Start breastfeeding as soon as possible
  • Ask for help with breastfeeding problems
